Jindaiji temple, located in Chofu City, Tokyo, was originally built in 733. It’s an easy trip to do in a morning or afternoon. It’s the second oldest temple in Tokyo. Sensoji in Asakusa is the oldest but it’s also very touristy in my opinion. Jindaiji retains an air of authenticity. Plan on having lunch when you visit because Jindaiji is famous for its hand-made soba. Although I said it’s an easy half-day trip, I would actually recommend taking your time to soak up the atmosphere. It’s not often you can escape to the past in Tokyo.

Jindaiji Temple was originally built in 733. It's the second oldest temple in Tokyo. Its set in spacious grounds surrounded by greenery.
There are lots of traditional shops in the temple grounds. They are great for trying traditional Japanese snacks and sweets.
The traditional shops add to the atmosphere and air of authenticity.
Two gods: Daikoku and Ebisu. Daikoku is believed by some to bring an abundance of food and wealth; Ebisu is believed to bring good luck to business and commerce.
Finding zen in nature: Contemplate life next to rocks, leaves and a trickle of water.
Characters from the horror manga GeGeGe no Kitaro, by manga illustrator Shigeru Mizuki, who lives locally.
